How long your boat's battery lasts depends on the type of battery and usage. For instance, starting batteries, which operate like car batteries, last about the same amount of time: three to five years. Deep-cycle batteries range from four to six years. Dual-purpose batteries have the most variation in battery life, ranging from three years to six.
In all cases, the final battery life varies based on usage, maintenance, and storage. If you have an older battery, it's best to get it tested before going out on the water, especially after storage.
The average amount of time to charge most marine batteries is 4-8 hours. The exact amount of time it takes to reach a full charge depends on several factors, like how much the battery is charged, if it is capable of "fast-charging", and the type of charger used.
We recommend wearing gloves and eye protection when handling your boat's battery, as you could be exposed to acid or corrosion. When removing an old flooded battery or installing a new one, keep the battery upright to avoid spilling.
When the battery is in the boat, make sure it is properly secured. You might need mounting brackets or tie-down straps to keep the battery in place. Otherwise, vibrations from waves and the engine itself can cause battery damage.
Safety is just as important during the off-season as it is on the water. Remove the battery from the boat (if possible) and recharge it fully.
