        Decoding the Numbers

        For Coin Cells (e.g., CR2032, CR2016)

        • The last two digits represent the thickness/height in tenths of a millimeter. (e.g., "32" means 3.2 mm, while "16" means 1.6 mm).

        Unlike coin cells, traditional button cells often use standardized model numbers. For instance, an LR44 (Alkaline) and an SR44 (Silver Oxide) are the same size (11.6 mm x 5.4 mm), but have different chemical compositions and discharge profiles.

        Different manufacturers sometimes use different naming conventions for the same physical battery. For example, a CR2032 can often be replaced by a DL2032. If you are unsure, consult a cross-reference chart or ask a specialist to match the battery chemistry, voltage, and physical dimensions.

        • When to DIY: The device has a simple slide-off battery door or an obvious screw compartment (like many remote controls or toys).

          • There are no visible screws, meaning the plastic is clipped together under high tension (common in car key fobs).

        This is a very common issue with premium batteries (such as Duracell) that have a bitter taste coating.         No, you should not swap them. While both are 3.0V Lithium batteries with a 20 mm diameter, they have different thicknesses. A CR2025 is 2.5 mm thick, whereas a CR2032 is 3.2 mm thick. Using the thinner CR2025 in a compartment designed for a CR2032 will likely cause loose physical contact, leading to intermittent power losses or preventing the device from turning on at all.

        Storage shelf life varies depending on the battery chemistry:

        • Lithium (CR): Up to 10 years when stored in a cool, dry place.
        • Silver Oxide (SR): Approximately 2 to 5 years.
        • Alkaline (LR): Approximately 2 to 3 years.
